LAUGHTER IN CHURCH?

Hermien’s take on laughter in church;

Some people get very offended by what other Christians call holy laughter. The Toronto Blessing movement was in particular demonised. Critics of this phenomena ascribe it to all kind of of things:, false manifestation of the Holy Spirit, the devil and his demons with particular reference to the Kundalini snake.

I am not saying that there is no evil laughing in the world. Laughter is neutral. What motivates laughter is what makes the difference.

My question is this: why can we sob our hearts out in church with no restraint, make a noise with tears flowing and tissues being passed on and everyone feeling sorry for you, but we cannot do the same with laughter?

Both crying and laughter are expressions, a release of emotion that helps and heals us.

Hardship is part of the Christian walk according to Romans 5:3 and in Nehemia 8:10 we read that JOY provides us with strenght to triumph in our troubles. Laughter is an expression of joy and the best medicine for our souls (Psalm 17:22). Science tells us the same thing. Laughter, and even a fake smile scientists say releases happy hormones into our system which is an antidote to depression.

I myself, as well as many other’s have experienced healing from very painful emotional problems by uncontrollably laughing in a church. It accelerates inner healing and saves people a lot of money and time not having to go to psychologists.

It is also a lot of fun and brings a wonderful Godly Presence of freedom and joy into a room. Jesus was anointed with JOY above His brethren (Hebrews 1:9) and God sits on His throne and laughs at His enemies (Psalm 2:4).

Maybe we can learn something about the great value of laughter and laugh at our enemies too. It may be the next best powerful weapon to unnerve an enemy and secure a victory.

And after all you can’t laugh and be unhappy and depressed at the same time, can you?
